LRIS is a public service of the State Bar of Wisconsin. The legal assistants who answer the phone are experienced in analyzing potential legal problems, and in helping callers locate the best source of help. They do not offer legal advice; they provide information, make referrals to appropriate agencies, and help callers locate an attorney to hire, whichever is most appropriate.
* Lawyer Hotline-Offers general legal information or an answer to a simple legal question. Legal assistants will make an appointment for a lawyer to call back, free of charge, usually within a few days, to briefly discuss callers' questions. NOTE: Attorneys do not discuss specific documents, topics requiring complex evaluation or research, or court procedures other than small claims courts.
* Community Referrals--Legal assistants can provide information about other community resources that may be able to help when callers have a legal concern which doesn't require a lawyer. For example, government agencies, consumer protection, legislative hotline, low-income legal services, equal rights division, or other services.
* Lawyer Referral--Legal assistants may refer callers to a lawyer anywhere in Wisconsin who has indicated an interest in dealing with their type of legal situation. The first ½-hr. consultation will cost no more than $20 when clients tell the participating attorney they were referred by LRIS. After that, the attorney charges regular fees.
Fees: Telephone answers are free. Callers are responsible for attorney's fees.
