The State of Wisconsin offers a burial assistance program for eligible decedents. To obtain a State-funded funeral and burial, the decedent must have been eligible for Title 19 Medicaid. Also, some Badger Care recipients may be eligible for the assistance. Family members interesed in the Wisconsin Funeral and Cemetery Aid Program (WFCAP) should speak with their funeral directors.
For those county residents who do not qualify for State burial assistance, families may be eligible for county funds. Milwaukee County will fund a funeral and burial up to a combined cost of $1,000 or up to $800 for a funeral and cremation. Families may need to pay additional expenses out-of-pocket. In addition to County residency, eligibility is based on the total cost of the funeral service, size of the decedent's estate or, if married, the couple's combined assets and spouse's income. The estate, or combined assets, cannot exceed $1,000. The monthly gross income limit is $1,226 for a couple, higher for families with children.
