Description:

Habitat for Humanity of Wausau, Inc. is a local Christian housing ministry affiliated with Habitat for Humanity International in Americus, Georgia.

Houses are built with the help of future homeowners, public school students, and volunteer workers using donated funds and supplies from a variety of sources, including:

* churches
* individuals
* businesses
* philanthropic foundations
* service organizations

When a house is completed it is sold only for its actual cost, approximately $116,900 (4 bedroom without special needs requirements) , with a 20-30 year no-profit, no-interest mortgage. The payments consist of principal, taxes, and homeowners insurance. There is no interest charged on this loan, and Habitat does not make any profit.

The homeowner family is required to work 300-500 sweat equity hours to build their home and/or other Habitat houses as well as other non-building related Habitat projects. These hours must be completed by the family prior to moving into their home.

The homeowners assume full responsibility for all repairs, maintenance, and operating costs of the home once they move in.

Home Applicants: Submit request for application by writing to the P. O. Box address. Applications are reviewed by a selection committee. Qualified applicants then get a one-on-one interview which takes place in their current home. The committee then meets to determine which qualified applicant to select for the next home construction. PLEASE NOTE: The application process takes about 30-45 days. For applicants who are selected, it takes up to 18 months to get into the new home. Family selection criteria include:

1. Actual housing need based on the suitability of family's current shelter
2. Income and ability to pay for a Habitat house
3. Willingness to participate as a partner with Habitat

Eligibilities: People with low income and inadequate housing, who will be unlikely candidates to own a home under conventional financing.

Hours: Call any time and leave a message on the answering machine so someone can get back to you.
